Branwen

Branwen is gentle, dignified, and quietly suffers. Her life is shaped by choices others make. In the Mabinogion, she is married off to bring peace between kingdoms, her body and future used to connect men and power. What starts as diplomacy soon becomes cruelty, as she is mistreated, silenced, and humiliated far from home.

Stripped of her voice and status, Branwen lives in isolation and keeps her pain hidden. Still, she shows quiet strength by finding a way to be heard, sending a message across the sea to start her own rescue. The effects of her suffering spread far, causing great loss and destruction.

Her story is about sacrifice and consequence. It reflects on being displaced, enduring hardship, and how fragile peace is when it depends on women’s suffering.
