Blodeuwedd is a woman made rather than born, created from flowers to embody ideals of beauty, purity, and obedience. In the Mabinogion, she is shaped as the perfect wife, with her identity set by male intention and her existence seen through others’ eyes. She has no past, no agency, and no voice, given only one purpose.
Yet beneath this created perfection, Blodeuwedd quietly resists. She develops desires beyond her assigned role and rejects the identity forced on her, seeking her own agency and autonomy. Her rebellion shows in her acts of love and betrayal, making her both a victim and a transgressor. In the end, she is turned into an owl, exiled and marked forever by her defiance.
Her story explores themes of creation and control, beauty and consequence, and what it means to be created for a purpose, in contrast to living a life defined by her own self determination.
